The Little Dog House

Dogs from all over North America have been dying from kidney failure after eating jerky-style treats made in China.  The info and FDA warnings have been out there on websites and networks for some time now, yet stores keep selling the products and uninformed people keep buying them and feeding them to their pets.  Disappoints me that there has been a lack of reporting in the media which reaches the general public like newscasts.  Please help spread the word.  YOU CAN KILL YOUR DOG BY FEEDING THEM JERKY TREATS MADE IN CHINA OR MADE ELSEWHERE BUT WITH INGREDIENTS FROM CHINA.  A good summary can be found on Dog Food Advisor's website at this link:  http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/dog-food-recall/chicken-jerky-treats/

Costco is great. They take anything back with no fuss.  Their computer always has a record of your purchases.  I don't think they'd "care" until an actual recall was issued officially.  Because it is a membership purchase, they know when you buy something that gets recalled and a computer calls you up and tells you about the recall.  Can't get that with any other grocer.

I returned an opened bag of jerky treats to Costco last year with a copy of the warning.  The money was refunded; there was no interest in the warning.

My dogs LOVE jerky treats and I was devastated when the reports and dangers started surfacing.  We now have homemade chicken jerky.  I think they love it just as much and there is nothing added to it so hopefully, there are no dangers.  All I do is filet the chicken breasts as thin as possible (the thinner, the better) and lay them out on a lightly greased cookie sheet (I use the olive oil Pam spray).  Preheat the oven to 180-200 and "bake" for 3 hours.  They will shrink tremendously.  Depending on the size of the breasts, 2 or 3 breasts will fill 2 large cookie sheets.  Different sites said refrigerating was not necessary and others said to refrigerate so we play it safe and store them in a ziploc bag in the refrigerator.  Even the cats come to get a little piece when it's being given out!  I know a dehydrator will do the same thing but the oven method is working great.

Jerky treats are those dried out strips of meat.

I am very frustrated. My dogs love these type of treats and we have been watching for a "safe" version of them. We bought a bag of sweet potato duck treats made by Vitalife. They have a logo at the top in big letters saying "Canada" and in smaller letters around "Canada" it says "inspected by" and "certified laboratories". It is misleading in two ways. One people may think it is saying it is made in Canada. Nowhere on the packaging does it say where it was made. In tiny print it says it was imported but not from where. In the FAQ on the Vitalife website, the first question is "Should I be concerned about the FDA warning regarding chicken jerky treats made in China?" There response is that there products are made in Thailand. Well, you may not be able to walk from China to Thailand, but they are way too close for my comfort on the world map. The Canada Certified Labs logo is also misleading because the FDA warning makes it clear that they have no idea why jerky treats from China are putting dogs into kidney failure. They are still testing, but so far have not been able to identify the reason. If that is so, what does it matter if a Canadian lab inspected the Vitalife treats as there is nothing for them to test for. Pisses me off. This bag is going back to Costco!
